Description

Slavery Document from years 1788 to 1802 ~ Orphans Court ~ Maintenance of Slaves ~ Rare & Unusual ~ Very sad part of history
It looks like there were 5 orphan children of Thomas H. Hale:
Betsy, Thomas B., Hannah, Barbara and Selina(? ~ cannot read that name).  They went to Orphans Court to find out what their personal estate was worth.  The earliest date I could find on the document is 1788 and the last date is 1802.
Picture #1 above reads (in part as I could not make out some words):  "In pursuance of a claim by the children of Th. H. Hale for profit of their personal estate, the Orphans Court referred the business to Col. N. Rochester who stated the heirs of the Negroes, the maintenance of such whose services were not worth their maintenance and also the maintenance, clothing, etc. of Mr. Hale's children. Those papers are copies of his report to the court by which the business is to be settled.  Col R can make out each child's ???."
The heading at each child's name reads:  "Maintenance of
child's name
Hale and such of his/her legacy slaves as were not worth their maintenance"
Includes the names of slaves and the costs of medical care, doctor bills, midwife fees, clothing, tuition, board washing, funeral expense, etc.
Pictures 2, 3, 4, and 5 above are the complete fronts and backs of the two pages.  Pictures 6 through 12 are closeup pictures of some parts of each page to make them more readable.
When I purchased this document, the information given to me was that Col. N. Rochester could be Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, founder of Rochester, New York, but I cannot confirm that information.  I also do not know what town or state Th. H. Hale was from.  It is not indicated on the documents as far as I could tell.
Pages measure about 12" x 15-1/4" fully open.  Old folds, some wear, several small tears along some folds.  Interesting but very sad document when you see that human beings were treated as property.
Document will be mailed Priority Mail Insured.
