PORT ROYAL MADE 8 POUNDER CANNON CHAIN SHOT,MORGAN’S LINE,1678This very crude Port Royal made 8 pounder cannonball chain shot was found in the remains of Morgan’s Line, sometimes called Morgan’s Wall or Fort Morgan.in Port Royal that dated to 1678 to 1692 & was destroyed in the 1692 earthquake. This is a partial chain shot as it has only a single 8 pounder cannonball still, attached. The cannonball is about 3 15/16” diameter & shows many crude casting flaws including the raised casting line just that still sticks out around the middle. This casting line was usually ground off but on the Port Royal cannonballs were just pounded flat with a heavy hammer & did not do a good job on this one! The chain is 14 7/8” long & is made from nine 2 14/32” x 1 ¾” links & is attached to the cannonball by a U shaped half ring. It is in fair good + condition with medium pitting & has a dark brown patina. There were very few artifacts ever recovered from Morgan’s Wall & are considered to be the rarest relics from Port Royal! It was found in the 1950's & was on display in the Port Royal Museum for many years but was sold by the museum when it closed down to pay off debts. It was bought by Joseph Becker a former U.S. Navy & sport diver that had dove on the old Port Royal harbor & had a large collection of relics. It comes with a certificate of authenticity & a Becker Collection letter. . Artifacts from Port Royal are now considered to be quite rare & are never seen at antique shows anymore. Port Royal Bay is now so polluted from the sewers of the nearby city that it is dangerous to swim or dive in the water! See my other Port Royal artifacts a cannon grape shot ball from Captain Henry Morgan’s brig listed separately.
