    Description

JAMESTOWN 3 POUNDER CANNONBALL, 1622 POHHATAN MASSACRE
This VERY rare Jamestown Virginia 3 pounder iron cannonball dates back to 1607  & was found on the mainland opposite from the Jamestown Fort. in 1861.                                                                            It is believed to have been fired at the Powhatan Indians during the 1622 Powhatan Indian
    Massacre
    of 1622
It was found by Confederate Captain William Allen in 1861 at the old Jamestown Fort on Jamestown Island in the James River of Virginia.
William Allen owned the island in 1861 & built several artillery fortifications to prevent the Union fleet from using the James River tom attack Richmond.
He found quite a few artifacts dating back to the early 1600’s & took them home with him to his local plantation as he realized their historical value.
This cannonball is iron, about 2 9/16 & has a flat spot on one side where it hit something hard after being fired.                                                                                                                                                            It is in good as found condition & is covered with light/ medium to medium pitting & has a dark brown patina.
There were very few cannonballs ever found from Jamestown & are very seldom seen at antique or militaria shows!
