Description

Excavated Bronze Bactrian Dagger or Short Sword. Estimate circa 2000 BC
Ancient bronze dagger reportedly excavated from the region near Uzbekistan during the 1950's.
I acquired this and another in France from a collector of ancient weapons approx. 15 years ago. The previous owner stated that this item was excavated somewhere near the region of Uzbekistan during the 1950's and that he had this one since the early 1970's. This area is known as the The Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (Oxus civilization). It is the modern archaeological designation for a Bronze Age culture of Central Asia, dated to c. 2200–1700 BC, located in present-day eastern Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, southern Uzbekistan and western Tajikistan. Daggers of this type are sometimes referred to as "Luristan" daggers which is a region closer to the area of what is now Iran. Many cultures in the middle east and Asia were intertwined for thousands of years.
This is a good mostly complete example measuring at 14" total length and weighing 15 oz..
Dagger has some heavy pitting and corrosion where there were impurities in the metal as expected from an ancient excavated item. The entire dagger has slight curves or "bows" to it. Patina is deep into the bronze.
