Description
A very rare English “Dog-Headed” naval hanger/Cutlass. Having a saw backed blade which is quite unusual to see, with marks stamped mid way to the single fuller. The hilt has a double shell guard design with a spiral quilon and single knuckle bow. The grip is grooved ebony and the pommel is somewhat typical of this period, sea dog head. These swords are likely to be of a style of that were ordered in 1692 by the British Board of Ordnance and were produced for issue to sailors or “matrosses”. Similar examples are featured in Harvey Withers “The Sword in Britain 1600-1700” and “Boarders Away” by Gilkerson.
