Description

Rare Cuirass Armor for Royal or Noble Child, estimate to be circa 1600's, 1700's
Impossible to find piece of armor made for a young royal or child of nobility.
Composed of gilded brass with elaborate ornamentation. Small in size to accommodate a young boy of approximately 6-12 years of age. Armor is lightweight and would have been used for formal occasions or processions. Armor shows a couple of old rivet repairs and missing rivet. A few dents and dings as can be view in the pictures. Slight old tear at bottom center. Leather straps have long been absent with only remnants left. I have periodically searched for around 15 years or so and have been unable to match this up with a particular royal or noble figure in portrait paintings.  I originally thought that this may be French, but many European countries had a similar style of ornamentation from this period. I have provided a picture of a 17th century portrait painting in my collection that shows a similar breast plate worn by another noble child (possibly the Prince of Orange, Netherlands, painting circa 1650's) for viewers to see how this was worn and how it looked in full costume.
Note: The painting is
not
included with this auction. Auction is for the breastplate/cuirass armor only.
A truly rare piece of history fit for any museum display or advance collector.
Measures approximately 9 1/2" tall x 12" wide.
Weighs 12 oz.
