Antique Silver Plated Stiletto/Awl
American * Circa 1900
This useful tool was found in a falling apart sewing basket.  It's a stiletto and the silver plated handle has a pretty floral design embossed on both sides
. The condition is excellent with no dents or other damage and it measures 3 7/8" long. The shaft and point are steel (attract a magnet) and the shape of the turned top on the shank is definitely American.
Stilettos had a variety of uses including unpicking stitches and creating eyelet holes in fabric that were then embroidered around in a technique called Broderie Anglais. They were also used to transfer design outlines to fabric, pricking paper patterns along the lines and then rubbing them with a pounce pad or colored chalk powder.
