ANCIENT VIKING MILITARY OIL LAMP WARTIME RELIC
The historical people known as Vikings, who hailed from Scandinavia in Northern Europe, are well-known today for their exploits in the west. The merchant-warriors also made their way into Eastern Europe, where they helped found a medieval federation in territory now known as Belarus, Ukraine and part of Russia. Their loose federation of principalities called Kievan Rus Survived for nearly 400 years, finally collapsing during the 13th-century Mongol invasion.
This ancient lamp measuring 41.4 mm is in beautiful condition and has fortunately survived the centuries intact. Everyday items made of metal fared better during wartime. Had this been made of clay it’s life would have been quite short. The artifact was part of a larger collection of artifacts belonging to a private collector. The collector acquired the collection while searching for artifacts in Ukraine. Along with the lamps a large number of iron arrowheads were unearthed indicating a military presence giving much more inherent value. I originally purchased the collection due to the association to ancient warfare. I plan to list a few lots of the ancient iron arrowheads in the near future. This will make an excellent addition for the serious collector of ancient military artifacts.
