===A FASCINATING PIECE OF 17TH CENTURY AMERICAN MANUSCRIPT===
Dated 1695, this original and genuine colonial American handwritten 17th century document is over 325 years old, being
    a
land deed for a sawmill to be built near what was referred to as the Hartford River. The land was purchased by John Hayle, Samuel Crowe, Nathaniel Loomas Jr,  and Lt. Timothy Phelps Jr from John Wolcott, grandson of founding father Henry Wolcott and great grandfather of Oliver Wolcott, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hon. Henry Wolcott, his brother,  has
    witnessed
    ,
    recorded
and signed the deed; the land was surveyed by Samuel Grant, son of Matthew Grant, the very first American colonial surveyor and the very man who paid the lined between the Massachusetts and
    Connecticut
state lines and the third great grandfather of President Ulysses S Grant. Witnesses to the deed are Thomas Grant and Nathan Gillette.
    The document
also contains John Wolcott's great wax seal, as shown. Measuring roughly 15" x 11.5", it remains in overall great shape with light splitting at the original fold lines and a few small losses at the upper corner. It is also framed, circa early 20th century, and will be shipped as such. More on these men below.

From John Sibun's book Our Town's Heritage 1708-1958 Hebron, Connecticut, published by Douglas Library, Hebron, CT, 1975: "The first white men to settle in town were Timothy Phelps and William Shipman, who arrived in Hebron from Windsor in June 1704. The area, then a wilderness, was used by the Indians as a hunting ground, and the few white men who knew of its existence passed through to other locations. The first two houses were located along Route 85 sourth of today's center. Approximately on what is now the Hilding driveway, Shipman built his homestead and Phelps constructed his home across the road on the land now owned by the Porter family. It is possible they worked on their property during the summer months only for the first two years, and returned to their families in Windsor when winter set in." Timothy moved with his younger brother Nathaniel to Hebron in 1690. Hebron was incorporated in 1708, and Timothy was one of the first selectmen. Another brother Joseph moved there later.

From John Sibun's book "Our Town's Heritage 1708-1958," Hebron, Connecticut, published by Douglas Library, Hebron, CT, 1975: "Here in 1706, so legend has it, the wives of Shipman and Phelps came to find their husbands. One evening the two original settlers heard strange sounds echoing across the valley, and an investigation revealed their families standing on the rock [Prophet's Rock] calling for them. It is conjecture whether they really could be heard. Be that as it may, the men were overjoyed to be reunited with their families. Martha Crow Phelps thought her place was with her husband and on her own initiative had resolved the situation. Bringing with her the goods that would make life in a virgin area more bearable, she camped along the way as the trip apparently took a few days. It is said she did not hurry, but negotiated the rough going stoically, clutching he Bible to herself as she lay down in the shelter of rocks and rested under fallen trees. Born in Windsor 36 years before, it could not have been an easy decision to make the journey, for Martha's mother had 'disappeared' many years before when she had set out on a like journey to seek her husband."

The emigrant Matthew Grant, born in England, Oct. 27th, 1601, died in Windsor, Conn., Dec 16th, 1681. He married Priscilla, Nov. 16th, 1625, who died Apr. 27th, 1644. He married 2nd, Mrs. Susanna Rockwell, daughter of Bernard Capon. His children were by his first wife.
On March 20th, 1630, he embarked with his family on the "Mary and John" and reached Boston May 30th, 1630. Settled at Dorchester and was admitted a freeman May 18th, 1631. In Oct. 1635, he went overland to the Connecticut River and assisted in the founding of Windsor, Conn., the family following in the spring of 1636.
He took a very active part in the public life in Windsor, deacon of the first church and recorder (town clerk) from 1652 to 1677. Selectman for many years, he frequently received the highest number of votes. Dr. Stiles says of him in his "History of Ancient Windsor", "Few men indeed filled so large a place in the early history of Windsor, or filled it so well, as honest Matthew Grant; his name figures in about every place of trust and his early records of the town show that his duties were conscientiously performed." He was compiler of "Old Church Ways in Windor" and the "Old Church Record", which furnished the basis for the histories of most of the families of ancient Windos. He was a type of the best settlers of new England, and left to his descendants an untarnished name and the example of an unswerving fidelity to the public trust committed to him, for he quaintly comments on his own work, "I have been careful to do nothing on one man's desire."
Came over on the "Mary & John" with Maverick and Warham from Plymouth, England to Boston. He emigrated on May 30, 1630. was a Puritan
