Description

1480 - 1500 Venetian Cinquedea Dagger
This very rare cinquedea is Ferrarese style and excellent overall shape.
While the majority of the dagger is complete it appears that the pommel was likely damaged and replaced in the 19th century.
These exquisite daggers are highly sought-after having only been made for a 100 years from 1450-1550 and the majority of them being made in the northern states and being made for wealth individuals. These daggers and short sword where status pieces and not many examples can be found on the open market.
The hilt is a large pommel with wooden grip that would have had a leather wrapping and also a curved set of quillons and side ring.
The dagger has the
traditionally cinquedea
heavy double edge fighting blade with the multiple fullers on either side, these to reduce the weight. The blade is in excellent overall shape and marked on either side with double
armourers
marks.
I attach a copy of similar marks found on a cinquedea currently in the Wallace collection. My investigations and references point to it being manufactured in Venice, it is also apparent that these style of marking was used by other armourers in Venice during the same period.
